Stones in the River

A bit of detail from the finished baptismal stole. A mix of watery blue dupioni smocked and bordered with french knots on a sandy cream background. Within the folds of silk are hidden beadwork and treasures. Appliquéd shell on the back of the neck is trimmed in varigated Egyptian cotton thread. All work is done by hand.

This particular stole is really focused on that special moment where the minister stands in front of the congregation and presents the person (be it an infant, child or adult) to be baptised. The congregation is then charged to play a supporting role in this person's life and a congregational promise is then often given.

This stole represents that promise, and how that despite that there will inevitably be stones in the river of our lives, God's love and the support of our church family will surround us.

Snowy Paraments

Currently in my workbasket.... white paraments for the pulpit. It will be used for Christmas, Easter, funerals, marriages among other times. I am going to call it "Layers" - the design representing the many layers in our lives, community, family, experiences, diversity, wounds, healings, commitments and teachings among others.

Here it is in raw form before being sewed into the final product.

Butterfly Stole - custom order

One white crisp cotton jacquard by Marc Jacobs, an organdy butterfly that was originally to have freestanding wings in silver had to be tacked down with, white mini bugle beads, due to the curl of the organdy. It turned out for the best, I think, a bit more spirited, which is more reflective of the recipient.

Custom Stole ~ A Teaching Garden

I really am thrilled to work with such great clients. My latest delivery, below, came from working with a great customer that wanted all the liturgical colors represented in one stole. The colors made me think of a garden and the flowers that would be powerful with their symbolism.

Here are a few pictures with the flowers and their meanings below...

Bluebells~ humility, gratitude and everlasting love
Lavender ~ devotion, purity, solitude and social justice
Poppies ~ mourning, remembrance and been used to symbolize the blood of Christ
Lily ~ devotion and friendship
Thistles ~ represent the suffering of Christ
Shamrocks ~ the Trinity – St. Patrick used them as a teaching tool
Strawberries ~ I decided to add these to represent the sweetness of God’s words. They traditionally represent humility, modesty and abundance
Olive branch (leaves near strawberries) ~ peace and hope.

This was so much fun to create! Thanks S.M. For being so great to work with!

Wedding Stoles

In just a bit I will be adding two wedding stoles to my shop on Etsy, and they both come in creamy dupioni. One has a chest detail of hand embroidered 'ribbons' that represent the two partners and a hand beaded circle or 'ring' representing the presence of the Trinity in the relationship.

Next is a simple wedding stole that has hand applied albacon vintage lace (circa 1930s) from France, and hand beading with seed beads as well as crystals, framed in a mass of tiny french (of course!) knots. ;)
This is located on the lower panels of the stole.

I love them both for different reasons... But think both are dreamy...

White on White

The daffodils are blooming in Montreat, and the azaleas are about to burst, but it is cool and chilly.

I am playing with white on white and seeing how far I can get before I have to commit to a larger design area below. The work is soothing and satisfying.

As I watch the world in chaos on CNN, there is a lot to be thankful for in my little spot on the mountain.
